Hi there, We are Doreen and Derek Higginson and come from a teaching and
farming and gardening background. We did farm for many years before moving the
nursery to Marton and settling into growing plants full time. We are a family
business with a nursery, water gardens and boutique plant centre. We started in a
small way 18 years ago and have grown larger and larger with time. These days
we have three staff plus ourselves and part timers working in and on the business.
Many years ago we got our daughter’s partner to get us started with a web site as
we realized that printed catalogues were an expensive option and young
gardeners were starting to purchase on line. At first it generated only 5% of our
sales but these days it is 90% of our sales. Our gate is still open from Tuesday to
Saturday and by appointment other days. We enjoy meeting other keen
gardeners and even folk who ‘have to’ garden. Please feel free to contact us
with any questions and we do not mind at all if you draw up your current garden
landscape so that we can help you plan a revamped area or new spot.
We sell wholesale to councils and landscapers mainly. Just send us your wish list and we will
quote wholesale prices if you are
a business and may claim GST.
This site is for gardening enthusiasts and for learners. We do not mind answering questions if you need help
with choices. Our website is designed to not just to sell plants but to give helpful advice and tips on growing.
The photos behind the small ones are gradually being upgraded to show the plants to advantage. We have
added cultural notes and details to many varieties and these come up when you click on more info and some
have a place at the top of lists such as the cultural notes for waterlilies. One of the best tips we can give you is
to click on show all by the page numbers as this downloads the whole list under that category much faster.
Have a cuppa waiting if your connection is slow. This saves a lot of time in the long run.
Our gardens and nursery are open to view on a take it as you find it basis. The ducks love it when you bring
bread and we have large numbers of birds in the garden now it is developed. There are nine waterlily ponds,
two larger ponds and goldfish as well. We are open most days but closed on Mondays. There is a bus park
available.
We specialize in large grade perennials of which we have hundreds of varieties, many not commonly found
in garden centres. Our plants are divided into categories to help you narrow down your choices. Our other
specialist areas are aquatic plants as we grow many waterlilies, marginal, oxygen, bog and wetlands
plants and trees. Check out our iris section as we grow many varieties of bearded and bog or water iris.
More information about these plants may be found in our information pages and under Water gardening in
the categories. We grow a small range of useful shrubs and trees and many exotic grasses.
Regards
Doreen and Derek Higginson and staff.
